U.S. officials familiar with intelligence data have revealed that Iran still retains military capabilities greater than what the U.S. administration or the Department of Defense (Pentagon) has officially declared.
According to CBS News, approximately half of Iran's stockpile of ballistic missiles and associated launch systems remained intact as of the start of the ceasefire in early April, according to three U.S. officials.
The officials explained that about 60% of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval arm is still present, including fast attack craft. They pointed to incidents where Iranian boats targeted commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz following President Donald Trump’s declaration of a unilateral ceasefire to allow more time for negotiations.
They added that while the Iranian Air Force was significantly damaged, it was not completely destroyed; it is believed that about two-thirds of the Iranian Air Force remains operational despite the U.S. and Israeli military campaign that targeted thousands of sites, including storage and production facilities.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had described the U.S. military operation, dubbed "Epic Storm," as having almost completely destroyed Iranian military capabilities. "We targeted Iran’s navy, its air force, and its leaders," Trump stated.
For his part, the Secretary of Defense stated in a Pentagon press briefing on April 8 that the operation represented a "historic and crushing military victory," adding that the operation "destroyed the Iranian military and rendered it incapable of fighting for years to come."
However, battle damage assessments indicate that the joint operation destroyed a large portion of Iran's conventional navy, according to a U.S. official speaking on the condition of anonymity. In contrast, part of the IRGC naval fleet—designed for unconventional warfare and consisting of smaller vessels—remains partially intact, which is believed to be affecting oil shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency also noted in a written statement that Iran remains capable of inflicting damage, explaining that it retains thousands of missiles and attack drones that could be used against U.S. forces and partners in the region.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the military operations achieved great success, noting that more than 13,000 targets inside Iran were hit. He confirmed the destruction of 92% of Iran's largest naval vessels and 44 mine-laying boats.
He added that the operation represented the "greatest destruction of a naval force in a three-week period since World War II," considering that media criticism of these results "reflects a disregard for the efforts of the fighting forces."
