U.S. officials familiar with intelligence reports have revealed that Iran retains military capabilities significantly greater than what the U.S. administration or the Pentagon has officially acknowledged.
According to CBS News, approximately half of Iran's ballistic missile stockpile and associated launch systems remained intact as of the start of the ceasefire in early April, according to three U.S. officials.
The officials stated that about 60% of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval arm remains, including fast attack craft. They noted an incident where Iranian vessels targeted commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz following President Donald Trump’s declaration of a unilateral ceasefire intended to allow for negotiations.
While the Iranian Air Force suffered heavy damage, it was not eradicated; approximately two-thirds of the fleet is believed to remain operational despite a joint U.S.-Israeli campaign that struck thousands of locations, including production and storage facilities.
President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously characterized the military operation—codenamed "Epic Storm"—as having nearly dismantled Iran's military capacity. "We targeted Iran’s navy, its air force, and its leaders," Trump stated.
In an April 8 briefing, the Defense Secretary called the operation a "historic and crushing military victory," claiming it had "destroyed the Iranian military and rendered it incapable of fighting for years to come."
However, internal battle damage assessments suggest the operation primarily neutralized Iran's conventional navy. A significant portion of the IRGC’s unconventional fleet—smaller vessels designed for asymmetrical warfare—remains functional, continuing to impact oil shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency also warned in a written statement that Iran remains capable of inflicting harm, retaining thousands of missiles and attack drones that could be deployed against U.S. forces and regional partners.
In response, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell defended the mission's success, noting that over 13,000 targets inside Iran were engaged. He confirmed the destruction of 92% of Iran's largest naval vessels and 44 mine-laying boats. Parnell described the campaign as the "greatest destruction of a naval force in a three-week period since World War II," dismissing media criticisms as a disregard for the efforts of the combat forces.
