The Palestinian cause, support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and the protection of children and humanitarian workers top the agenda of intensive Jordanian diplomatic activity during the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, in which Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi is participating.
The Jordanian agenda includes a series of ministerial meetings and high-level encounters focusing on developments in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, supporting UNRWA, enhancing commitment to international humanitarian law, and protecting humanitarian personnel, alongside supporting international efforts aimed at implementing the two-state solution.
Regarding UNRWA, Safadi will co-chair on Thursday, alongside Spain and Brazil, the annual ministerial meeting to support the agency and mobilize political and financial backing for it, with the participation of the UN Secretary-General, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure continued support and enable it to persist in delivering services to Palestinian refugees.
On Wednesday, Jordan will co-host, alongside Belgium and the European Union, a high-level event titled "Call to Action for Palestinian Children in the West Bank and Gaza Strip," amidst international efforts aimed at strengthening the protection of Palestinian children and responding to their humanitarian needs.
Safadi will also participate in the annual coordination meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states, held at UN Headquarters during the high-level week to discuss developments in the West Bank and Jerusalem. The OIC has not yet specified the date of the meeting on its published schedule.
Additionally, Safadi will participate on Thursday in the high-level ministerial meeting of the International Coalition to Implement the Two-State Solution, within the framework of international efforts to push toward achieving peace based on the two-state solution.
On international humanitarian law, Safadi will attend a meeting on the "Global Initiative to Mobilize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law," launched by Jordan, Brazil, China, France, Kazakhstan, and South Africa in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), aiming to reinforce political commitment to the rules and principles of international humanitarian law.
Safadi will also take part on Wednesday in the inaugural meeting of signatory states to the "Declaration on the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel," marking one year since the declaration's launch, to discuss enhancing worker protection, ensuring their safety and security during duties, addressing challenges facing humanitarian work, and ways to strengthen international protection for personnel in this field.
Furthermore, the foreign minister will participate in panel discussions covering regional and international issues of mutual interest, alongside the consultative ministerial meeting of Arab League member states.
On Friday, Safadi will also attend the joint OIC-Arab League ministerial meeting on Jerusalem, scheduled during the General Assembly's high-level week in New York.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings, Safadi will hold a series of bilateral meetings with participating foreign ministers and officials to discuss bilateral relations, regional and international developments, and issues of mutual concern.
The program of meetings and engagements in which Jordan is participating during the General Assembly reflects the Kingdom's diplomatic focus on the Palestinian cause, humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian territories, mobilizing support for UNRWA, reinforcing adherence to international humanitarian law, and coordinating with nations and international organizations on priority regional and global issues.
