His Majesty King Abdullah II delivered a speech on Tuesday at the opening session of the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations, asserting that the world is traversing a unprecedented era defined by rapid structural changes, global volatility, and escalating humanitarian crises.
His Majesty stated that humanity is living through an extraordinary juncture in history, noting that the world has never before witnessed such an overwhelming accumulation of knowledge alongside an accelerated pace of global change. He observed that the declining human attention span in an era dominated by digital screens reflects how collective attention has become a scarce and critical resource.
Addressing the General Assembly, the King emphasized that what the international community chooses to focus on dictates which conflicts receive sustained diplomatic intervention, determining whether human suffering in any given region remains rejected or becomes gradually normalized over time.
His Majesty cautioned that for anyone doubting whether the crisis in the Middle East remains confined within its geographic boundaries, one need only examine the rising energy and food bills impacting ordinary households across the globe. He noted that the war in Iran has clearly demonstrated how swiftly regional instability disrupts international trade flows, investment, and daily life well beyond the region's borders.
King Abdullah recalled his repeated warnings before the UN General Assembly regarding the risks of leaving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict unresolved, criticizing the international community for attempting to contain the crisis rather than addressing its root causes. He stated that every new Israeli violation has historically been treated as a temporary anomaly until the temporary became permanent, and the permanent became a systematic approach.
His Majesty pointed out that the current Israeli government continues to disregard ceasefire agreements in Gaza, carrying out persistent attacks, destroying civilian infrastructure, refusing to withdraw, and confining Palestinians to merely one-third of the Gaza Strip's total area. He characterized events in Gaza as an attempt to erase the Palestinian presence and forcibly impose a new reality on the ground.
Turning to the situation in the West Bank, the King asserted that the Israeli government's ongoing policies constitute forced displacement and a war crime. He stressed that the continuation of one of the world's longest military occupations raises a fundamental question: if international law can be ignored with impunity for decades, what value remains of its legitimacy?
His Majesty concluded by underscoring that global crises and security challenges are escalating rapidly, emphasizing that the choices made by the international community today will directly shape the trajectory of global stability and human dignity in the future.
