Former Minister, MP, and Senator Nader Al-Zuhairat praised the key themes in His Majesty King Abdullah II's speech before the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing that it clearly addressed the deep crises affecting the region, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, developments in Gaza and the West Bank, and critical events in Syria along with their direct impact on Jordan’s security and stability.
Al-Zuhairat stated that the King spoke from a position of Arab and Jordanian responsibility, moving beyond describing the Palestinian tragedy to presenting the international community with a fundamental question regarding the global system's seriousness in enforcing international law and legitimacy resolutions. He noted that His Majesty pointed out how decades of conflict persisted because the international community chose to "manage the conflict rather than confront and end it."
He added that the Palestinian cause featured in the King's address as a matter of human rights, dignity, and statehood—not merely a deferred political file. He highlighted His Majesty’s assertion that events in Gaza and the West Bank are interconnected, aimed at altering reality on the ground to render a viable Palestinian state impossible.
Al-Zuhairat noted that the King explicitly defended the Palestinian people's right to statehood, life, freedom, and dignity, while rejecting the framing of the Palestinian issue as a religious conflict, stressing that it concerns the rights of all Palestinians—Muslim and Christian alike—to enjoy equal rights.
He further highlighted that a key feature of the King's speech was linking Jordan’s security to neighboring developments, particularly in Syria, where His Majesty warned of regional fallout from military expansion and changing facts on the ground, stating clearly: "Today, Syria is the warning that the international community chooses not to see."
Al-Zuhairat affirmed that His Majesty addressed Syria to safeguard regional and national security, underscored by the King’s declaration that "any threat to our northern borders or water security is a threat to our national security," confirming that Jordan will not ignore threats to its security, water, or people's interests.
He pointed out that His Majesty presented Jordan as a nation combining diplomacy with institutional strength, expanding connections from the Gulf to the Mediterranean while countering terrorism, bolstering defense capabilities, and maintaining its humanitarian and regional role.
Al-Zuhairat concluded that the King's address provided a profound reading of the region's reality, calling for the restoration of international law and justice, while emphasizing that military force alone cannot deliver meaningful solutions without legitimate institutions, mutual trust, and adherence to international agreements.
