In moments of regional transformation, the value of states is measured not only by their accumulated history and standing, but by their ability to translate this capital into influence at the very moment the region is being reshaped. The speech by His Majesty King Abdullah II before the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly consolidated the Jordanian stance on the Palestinian cause, while simultaneously raising a broader question about Jordan's position and its capacity to influence the future of the region.
His Majesty placed the core of the crisis in the continued management of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict rather than addressing its roots, to the point where what was considered temporary became permanent, and facts on the ground turned into policies. In the Palestinian case, the war and destruction in Gaza intersect with settlement expansion and the alteration of realities in the West Bank, along with the pressures on Jerusalem. This convergence threatens the prospects of a political solution and raises the cost of failing to reach a just settlement.
For Jordan, Palestine and Jerusalem do not constitute a separate foreign policy file; rather, they are inextricably linked to its history, interests, national security, and regional position. The Hashemite Custodianship of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem lies at the core of this capital, with its modern roots extending back to 1924. Furthermore, the 2013 Jordanian-Palestinian agreement reaffirmed the role of His Majesty King Abdullah II as the custodian of these holy sites.
This legacy grants Jordan a unique political and diplomatic standing. The priority in the upcoming phase lies in translating Jordan's elements of strength—its geographic location, expertise, international relations, and the political and diplomatic capital tied to Jerusalem—into a more effective presence in the tracks that are reshaping the region, all while preserving Jordanian constants and expanding partnerships that serve national interests.
This is the broader meaning within His Majesty's speech when he presented Jordan as a "principled, open, and steadfast" model, emphasizing that military force alone does not produce sustainable solutions, and that stability requires political legitimacy, trust in institutions, and respect for international rules.
Therefore, the significance of the New York speech does not stop at cementing the Jordanian position, but extends to the political and diplomatic action that could ensue from it. The speech defined the risks and anchored the fundamental principles; translating this vision into an influential presence, strategic partnerships, and practical tracks remains the most critical challenge in the coming phase.
In protracted conflicts, time is not neutral; the more a solution is delayed, the more facts accumulate on the ground, and the higher the cost of a settlement becomes.
