The scene of nearly 70 countries walking out of the United Nations General Assembly hall sparked widespread reaction after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the podium to deliver his speech.
The delegations' walkout came in protest against the Israeli occupation's crimes in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as well as ongoing Israeli violations in the region.
Some countries left a single representative behind in a scene reflecting a reduced level of diplomatic representation, while representatives of other nations chose not to attend the speech from the start.
Delegations from Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia, Syria, Algeria, Yemen, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Kuwait walked out of the hall.
Delegations from Spain, Brazil, Peru, Cuba, Nigeria, Ghana, Libya, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Oman, Niger, Madagascar, Botswana, the Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda, Cape Verde, and several other countries also walked out or were absent from the beginning.
Representatives of the United States, Germany, Argentina, Hungary, Serbia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Greece listened to Netanyahu's address in the General Assembly hall.
The United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Belgium, and Norway kept representatives in the hall, as did the European Union delegation, while China left a single diplomatic representative during the address.
Other countries represented during the speech included Australia, Austria, Canada, Portugal, Poland, Denmark, Romania, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Iceland, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Kenya, and El Salvador.
Among Arab nations, the delegations of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain remained present in the chamber.
The collective walkout left large sections of the General Assembly hall visibly empty as Netanyahu continued his address.
During his address at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu stated that he had drawn a red line 14 years ago, pledging to neutralize Iran and prevent it from developing nuclear weapons intended to destroy Israel.
He noted that an Iranian nuclear capability could threaten the entire world, arguing that "in defending itself, Israel is also defending many countries".
He claimed that Israel had repeatedly faced the threat of annihilation, noting that Israel is fighting a war on seven fronts against Iran and its allies.
He asserted that Israel, with the support of its American allies, was able to deliver decisive blows to Tehran and its regional allies, claiming that certain nations had threatened to "wipe out" Israel and prepare mass graves for Israelis.
Regarding settler violence, Netanyahu claimed that what some settlers do is throw stones, chop down a few trees, and occasionally shoot or set fires, resulting in the death of only two or three people.
He described settlers as "law-abiding people and peaceful individuals," calling media reports a "distortion of facts".
Addressing the war in the Gaza Strip, he claimed that the Israeli occupation military did everything possible to keep civilians out of harm's way by instructing them to leave combat zones via phone calls and leaflets, further claiming that Israel had distributed a ton of food for every person in Gaza.
