By Dr. Izzat Jaradat
Arab societies face a decisive crossroads between deep-seated challenges and renewed hope driven by youth toward a digital, rapidly evolving future. Major challenges can be prioritized as follows: poverty and unemployment, instability, and the education crisis.
Large numbers of young people suffer from a lack of job opportunities, low daily income, and substandard social services received during their preparation for the future. Consequently, the dual challenge of poverty and unemployment has become chronic. Over time, this duo poses an increasingly grave threat to the future of Arab societies—despite their vast potential and resources—amid a lack of Arab solidarity and integration across various fields, particularly in economic affairs and sustainable development.
Societal instability presents another major challenge, as it undermines social peace and individual safety. As a result, society loses its capacity for growth and development, while individuals lose their ability to contribute and participate positively. Therefore, strengthening factors of societal stability becomes an utmost priority to build resilience and fortify sustainable development.
As for the education crisis in Arab societies, it requires serious educational reform—most importantly, shifting mindsets from past-oriented thinking to a future-oriented vision, and transitioning from traditional methods to digitalization in a leap that moves beyond slow progress. The longer the delay in joining the digital world, the wider the gap becomes. Digitalization began with the internet and quickly evolved into artificial intelligence (AI); as societies reach the world of AI, they will continually find themselves confronting even more advanced technology.
Where lies the hope?
Hope becomes attainable when key factors combine: youth represented by contemporary Generation Z, social awareness, and an understanding of digital transformation. Youth constitute the largest demographic across Arab societies, serving as the foundational pillar for change and progress. Elevating social awareness fosters a deeper commitment to human rights, social justice, and the citizen's right to high-quality social, educational, healthcare, and family care services.
Furthermore, understanding digital transformation and adapting to advanced technology opens new doors in employment, education, and both individual and social development.
Conclusion:
If serious investments are made in education and scientific research, alongside encouraging youth to participate actively in society, Arab societies will move toward prosperity. However, if crises persist in the absence of solutions and initiatives, the risks of an uncertain future will grow—a future that ultimately depends on the decisions made by Arab societies to support reform and, above all, empower the modern, future-ready Arab individual.
