U.S. President Donald Trump is prepared to grant Iran economic sanctions relief and unfreeze restricted Iranian financial assets in exchange for concrete and verifiable progress regarding Tehran's nuclear program, a senior U.S. official told Axios on Monday.
The initiative comes as international mediators intensify efforts to reactivate diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran amid lingering disputes over Iran's nuclear capabilities, U.S. economic sanctions, and navigation security through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to an informed source, mediators are expected to conduct separate consultations with U.S. and Iranian representatives on Monday or Tuesday, as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Qatari intermediaries remain in the United States.
The source added that upcoming talks are projected to center on a modified version of the 7-day proposal presented by Iran on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Earlier, official Iranian news agency IRNA reported that no new negotiation sessions had been scheduled between Iran and the United States, following statements by U.S. President Donald Trump hinting at a potential resumption of talks this week.
Citing a source close to the Iranian delegation participating in UN General Assembly meetings in New York, IRNA stated that the delegation "does not intend to hold negotiations with the United States". The agency noted that Tehran's positions were explicitly conveyed to the American side last Tuesday via Qatari intermediaries, adding that the Iranian delegation is scheduled to return to Tehran on Tuesday.
President Trump told Axios on Sunday that he anticipates discussions with Iranian counterparts to resume this week, following his rejection of an Iranian proposal offering to halt hostilities and restore maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical conduit for global oil supplies and a focal point of ongoing tension between Washington and Tehran, nearly seven months after conflict escalated across the region. Iran has effectively restricted passage through the strategic waterway, while the United States responded by enforcing a maritime blockade on Iranian commercial ports.
The United States has refrained from conducting military strikes inside Iranian territory since September 1, despite subsequent maritime incidents involving commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
