MP Moatz Abu Rumman requested, in a parliamentary memo addressed to the Minister of Labor, a one-month extension for rectifying the status of non-compliant non-Jordanian workers. He specified that this should serve as a final grace period, allowing employers and workers to complete status adjustment procedures in accordance with legal frameworks before transitioning to wide-scale inspections and legal enforcement measures.
Abu Rumman explained that the request stems from a keenness to achieve the objectives of the status adjustment decision and ensure that the process delivers its maximum economic and legal outcomes. He noted that the current adjustment period ends at the close of business on September 30, 2026, while procedures to issue "deportation" flags against non-compliant workers are scheduled to begin on October 1.
Abu Rumman pointed out that several sectors in the Jordanian labor market are directly dependent on foreign labor, particularly agriculture, construction, manufacturing, restaurants, and services. This reality necessitates handling the issue with a well-considered, gradual approach that balances law enforcement with maintaining economic stability and production continuity.
Abu Rumman added that the extension would afford the government an opportunity to increase the number of workers who adjust their status and shift a larger portion of the existing workforce from informal to legal employment. This would generate additional work permit fees, elevate compliance with the law, enhance official authorities' ability to monitor and regulate the market, and allow non-compliant workers to settle their legal status.
