In an achievement recorded in golden letters in the history of Jordanian higher education, Al-Ahliyya Amman University topped all Jordanian universities, standing alone at the summit in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings—one of the most prestigious and impactful international rankings—ranking 376–400 globally out of 2,297 universities across various continents.
With this milestone, Al-Ahliyya Amman University, which was established in 1990 as the first private university in Jordan, stands at the forefront of all Jordanian public and private universities alike—a moment summarizing decades of solid academic development and a vision that firmly believed excellence is not granted, but forged.
Furthermore, the university's global footprint did not stop there; it secured 22nd place worldwide in the International Outlook indicator, placing it among the top 1% of global universities for this metric. This serves as an international testament to the bridges of partnership built with universities and research centers worldwide, and to its academic environment that gathers students and faculty from diverse cultures and nationalities under one roof.
Dr. Maher Al-Hourani, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated: "Al-Ahliyya Amman University taking the top spot among Jordanian universities is not the ceiling of our ambition, but rather its first step toward broader horizons." He added: "From the beginning, we placed our bet on human potential and knowledge. Today, this global recognition confirms that our bet was well placed and that Jordan is capable of offering an exemplary university model to the world. Our ambition is not merely to be present on global maps of excellence, but to be a university sought out by students and researchers from around the world, and a beacon generating knowledge that the world cites and builds upon." He emphasized: "We will continue our sustainable journey, believing that sincere work alone endures, in line with the Quranic verse: 'As for the foam, it vanishes, being cast off; but as for that which benefits the people, it remains on the earth.'"
For his part, Mr. Omar Al-Hourani, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, said: "We in the Board of Directors believed that investing in scientific research and infrastructure is the investment with the most lasting impact, so we allocated resources without hesitation. What we see today in the Times rankings is the return on this investment, and we will press forward with the same determination, because a university that builds for knowledge builds for the future of the nation and its coming generations."
For his part, the University President, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Hamdan, stated: "This achievement bears the signature of every member of the Al-Ahliyya Amman University family—from a professor in the lecture hall and a researcher in the lab, to an employee in their office and a student carrying their university's name wherever they go. Therefore, we dedicate it to the nation and its leadership, promising to protect this standing through further hard work, research, and openness to the world. Above all, it is a message to our students and alumni that the degree they hold comes from a university that stands today among the world's elite, and that its name will open doors for them wherever they turn."
In turn, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abu Orabi, Dean of Scientific Research, stated: "Behind this achievement are researchers who believed that scientific research is a mission before being a number. Their output published in top global journals and their cross-continental research partnerships were the two wings with which the university soared to this stature. We will continue directing research toward serving society and adding true value to human knowledge, for rankings are a testament to what we have achieved, and knowledge is a promise of what we will accomplish."
Dr. Ahmed Mansour, Director of the Sustainability and International Ranking Center, summarized the achievement by saying: "Today, the university writes an unprecedented chapter in the history of Jordanian higher education. It is the first Jordanian university to enter the club of the top 400 universities in the world in the history of the Times rankings. This is the fruit of a steady and well-planned rise—from the 601–800 tier in 2024 to 376–400 today—placing the university among the top 18% of 2,297 universities worldwide, a position no Jordanian university has previously reached given the scale of the competition."
