Sometimes, a person's most difficult moments do not begin with a choice they made, but with an incident that turns their life upside down in seconds. This is what happened to Mustafa, a young Egyptian residing in Jordan, whose outing in the waters of the Gulf of Aqaba turned into a race against time after losing his leg in an accident that could have ended with losing it forever. However, what happened next is the most crucial part of the story.
In injuries like these, time is a decisive factor; a severed limb does not give doctors an open window, and every minute can impact the possibility of reattaching it. Therefore, the effort to save Mustafa began from the very first moments of the accident: rescuing him after he dived in search of his leg, followed by divers continuing to search for the severed limb, handling it medically, and transporting the case to the specialized surgical team to make a decision.
The doctors faced a difficult choice, but they decided to try. Inside the operating room, a different kind of battle began: over eleven hours of continuous work to reconnect bones, blood vessels, nerves, and tissues, and to restore blood circulation to the severed limb. The surgery was not merely about reattaching separated parts, but an attempt to breathe life back into a limb that had lost it in a single moment. Ahead of Mustafa now is a long phase of treatment and rehabilitation that requires time, patience, and meticulous care so that the muscles, nerves, and tendons can gradually regain their functions.
What took place was not an achievement accomplished by a single individual. Behind every step was a collective effort of human beings: those who pulled Mustafa from the water, the divers who searched for the severed limb, the Civil Defense personnel who handled his condition during those critical moments, and then the doctors, nurses, and surgical team who granted him a chance to recover what he had lost.
In moments like these, medicine transforms from a profession into a responsibility, and knowledge and expertise become a genuine opportunity for rescue. Perhaps the most deeply human aspect of Mustafa's story is that no one paused to consider his nationality in his moment of peril. He is an Egyptian living in Jordan, but such details lose all meaning when a human being is in desperate need of help. At that moment, there are no borders; there is only an injured human being and people who resolved to do everything within their power to save him.
What lies ahead for Mustafa is not easy, but it carries something that was by no means guaranteed after the accident: a chance. A chance to continue his life and for the hardest moment he experienced to become a new beginning. Here, Mustafa's story condenses a meaning that needs few words to explain:
This is who we are... the Nashama.
