Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Friday that any entity proven to be involved in the flydubai aircraft incident will pay a "very heavy price," without providing evidence pointing to the responsibility of any state.
"Over time, the picture is becoming clearer: the attacker underwent a path of 'Islamist' radicalization and sought to crash the plane with its passengers on board," Netanyahu said in a statement.
Referring to the co-pilot who attacked the captain in the cockpit, he added: "We are investigating whether he was sent, and whoever sent him will pay a very heavy price."
Netanyahu did not specify any country potentially involved in the incident, though he has consistently been quick to point fingers at Iran, against which Israel and the United States engaged in a war in February.
US President Donald Trump previously stated in response to a question about the incident that he had heard Iran was involved, adding that it would be "hit very hard" if its involvement were proven.
The flydubai aircraft, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv carrying approximately 100 Israelis, diverted to Saudi Arabia after transmitting emergency signals following an altercation between the pilots, rather than a hijacking attempt.
An official source at the Saudi Ministry of Interior stated on Thursday that the captain and co-pilot of the flydubai flight that made the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia had departed for Abu Dhabi after their medical conditions improved and health teams permitted them to accompany an Emirati security team.
The source explained in a statement published on the Saudi Ministry of Interior's official pages that preliminary investigations conducted by competent Saudi authorities alongside an Emirati security team indicated an assault on the captain by his co-pilot, resulting in various injuries to both.
The source emphasized that Saudi Arabia manages emergency situations in accordance with its international and humanitarian commitments and approved civil aviation regulations, maintaining air navigation security and rapid response capabilities for extraordinary events.
Saudi authorities implemented necessary emergency protocols for flydubai Flight FZ1073, granting clearance for an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk on Wednesday. The aircraft landed safely at 9:45 AM carrying 174 passengers and eight crew members, all of whom received required care.
By 5:40 PM, all passengers resumed their journey on a replacement flydubai aircraft, while the crew returned to Dubai on another flight, with the exception of the captain and co-pilot, who were hospitalized for treatment until cleared for transport.
