Yemeni government forces announced on Monday taking control of the Bab Al-Mandab Strait and Dhubab airport west of Taiz Governorate, as part of a broad military operation launched by the government to reclaim areas under Houthi control. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that legitimate forces established "effective control" over the strait while fighting persists in the area.
Official spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Colonel Majid Al-Nuzaili, stated that the Giants Brigades and "Nation's Shield" forces managed to secure control of Bab Al-Mandab and Dhubab airport, noting that the road connecting Dhubab to Al-Mocha was severed and brought under firepower control, according to media sources citing a statement from the Yemeni military.
Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism in the internationally recognized Yemeni government, Muammar Al-Eryani, told Reuters that Saudi-backed government forces consolidated effective control over the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, adding that clashes with the Houthis remain ongoing in the surrounding area.
According to Reuters, government forces advanced rapidly along the coast supported by intensive Saudi airstrikes, seizing key positions in the Dhubab area overlooking the narrowest point of the strait. Three military sources and a government source told the agency that government forces captured large parts of Dhubab District and are working to consolidate complete control.
Al-Eryani added that military forces took control of the Dhubab airstrip, located slightly inland from the strait, successfully isolating remaining Houthi elements in the region, while a government source told Reuters that fighting continues at a military base near the strait.
Bab Al-Mandab constitutes a strategic waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, with control over the coastal areas overlooking it holding immense significance for international trade and maritime security.
Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Rashad Muhammad Al-Alimi announced on Monday the launch of Operation "Fajr Al-Yaman" (Dawn of Yemen) to restore state institutions, liberate the capital Sana'a, and end the Houthi militia's coup.
Writing on X, Al-Alimi stated that the will of the Yemeni people and the valor of the armed forces across its various formations—backed by brothers and friends—will push Yemen toward a new dawn of freedom, peace, and stability.
Official Spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, Major General Turki Al-Malki, announced that 100 fighter jets participated at dawn Monday in Operation "Dawn of Yemen."
He added that the Coalition has destroyed 324 high-value targets since the operation began, highlighting ongoing air protection over the Bab Al-Mandab Strait and active engagement with moving targets.
