A U.S. report warned that Israel faces multiple political, economic, and social crises that could push it toward "the risk of civil war or political collapse," according to Israeli newspaper Maariv.
The newspaper stated that the report, published on "Drop Site News," noted that years of war in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran have deepened political, economic, and social rifts inside Israel.
According to the report, titled "Division from Within" and prepared by the CIA's "Red Cell" unit in August, Israel faces a combination of political polarization, economic pressure, and rising military spending, alongside a conscription crisis, threatening to exacerbate internal tensions.
The report pointed out that Israeli elections scheduled for October 27 come amid these accumulating crises, noting the return of soldiers from combat after years of war and the associated psychological impact on some of them.
It added that the mandatory draft crisis, particularly exemptions granted to Ultra-Orthodox "Haredi" Jews from military service, is deepening the divide between secular and religious citizens, amid the continued mobilization of reservists, as well as rising settler violence in the West Bank.
The report observed, according to Maariv, that there is a crisis tied to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself, who is fighting to maintain power, and that this is heightening political and constitutional tensions in Israel.
It also noted that Israel faces external isolation and declining support within the United States, considering that growing external pressure could aggravate internal friction.
Israel is preparing to hold elections on October 27, while opinion polls cited by the report indicate that neither Netanyahu's camp nor his opponents can secure the required majority to form a government.
