2026 Nobel Peace Prize: Awarded to former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.
Dedication: Pillay dedicated the prize to survivors of international crimes while warning of rising attacks on human rights and the ICC.
Nobel Committee Stance: Stated it takes no position on Gaza genocide claims, noting the issue rests with judicial bodies like the ICJ.
Israeli Reaction: Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the award, accusing the decision of legitimizing anti-Israel bias.
South African judge Navi Pillay, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in a recognition that sparked mixed reactions due to her role in UN investigations regarding the war in the Gaza Strip.
Pillay stated that she dedicated the award to all survivors of international crimes, warning that the world is experiencing a period where human rights face escalating attacks—particularly targeting the International Criminal Court—and calling for collective action in defense of the rule of law.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights welcomed the awarding of the prize to Pillay, stating that it underscores the fundamental importance and value of human rights globally.
Shabia Mantoo, spokesperson for the office which Pillay led between 2008 and 2014, said that this honor affirms, more than ever, the crucial importance of human rights amidst current global challenges.
In response, the Norwegian Nobel Committee stated that it does not take a position on whether Israel committed genocide in the Gaza Strip, addressing questions regarding the award to Pillay, who chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry that brought that allegation against Israel.
Nobel Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes expressed confidence in the professionalism and integrity of the Commission of Inquiry, but emphasized that determining the issue of genocide falls under the jurisdiction of relevant judicial bodies.
Frydnes added that the International Court of Justice is the body that will rule on the matter, stressing that "the Nobel Committee is not a court."
For its part, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned awarding the prize to Pillay, arguing that the decision legitimizes what it described as "anti-Israel hatred and bias".
In a post on the platform X, the ministry stated that honoring Pillay does not represent a celebration of justice, but rather a distorted weaponization of the prize to legitimize anti-Israel stances.
It added that the Nobel Committee rewarded what it called "the biggest lie of the 21st century," invoking a reference to Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister of Nazi Germany.
Pillay’s win was announced at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo following a secret selection process featuring a nominee list of 287 candidates, including 208 individuals and 79 organizations. Names of nominees remain confidential for 50 years.
The prize is scheduled to be presented on December 10 at a ceremony held at Oslo City Hall, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
Pillay’s win comes as international disagreements persist over the war in Gaza and accountability for alleged violations of international law, amid divergent stances among human rights organizations and concerned parties regarding the characterization of events in the Strip and responsibility for them.
