A study published on October 5, 2026, on the medical news platform Medscape highlights that the health risks associated with sugar-sweetened beverages extend beyond obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease to include stomach cancer, according to Dr. Jamal Al-Dabbas, Consultant in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.
The study revealed that consuming one or more sugar-sweetened beverages daily was associated with more than double the risk of developing stomach cancer compared to rarely consuming them (Hazard Ratio 2.45).
The association was observed across both sexes, with a stronger correlation found among women. Fructose intake was also independently linked to an elevated risk.
Notably, the study found no similar risk increase associated with artificially sweetened beverages, and the relationship was shown to be independent of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection.
Researchers suggested several potential underlying mechanisms, including weight gain, insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, fructose-induced metabolic impacts, and disruption of the gut microbiome, though the precise biological mechanism remains unproven.
Dr. Al-Dabbas noted that evidence continues to accumulate in favor of reducing sugar-sweetened beverage consumption as a prudent health decision beyond the prevention of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, emphasizing that water and unsweetened drinks remain the safest choices.
