RIYADH — The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced a temporary suspension of operational activities at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday following an attack targeting the facility, noting that initial damage assessments are underway.
GACA stated in an official release that the temporary closure remains in effect pending a full safety and security evaluation in coordination with relevant airport authorities, adding that updated procedures will be released once assessments conclude.
An explosion occurred at King Khalid International Airport on Saturday, prompting immediate evacuations and operational suspensions. Medical sources reported that dozens were injured in the event, with at least five individuals admitted to intensive care and air ambulances utilized for casualty transport. Kuwait Airways subsequently canceled scheduled flights operating between Kuwait and Riyadh due to the airport closure.
A diplomatic source informed Agence France-Presse (AFP) that a missile launched by Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen struck the airport. Saudi authorities have not issued a formal confirmation regarding the precise circumstances, and no official claim of responsibility was released by the Houthi movement on Saturday.
This incident follows earlier strikes targeting Saudi aviation infrastructure earlier in the week. GACA previously reported three fatalities resulting from two attacks at King Khalid International Airport on Thursday, alongside three additional deaths from strikes on Riyadh and Abha airports on Tuesday and Wednesday.
