Jordan was elected on Tuesday to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2027–2029 with 171 votes during elections held as part of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Fouad Al-Majali, emphasized that the Kingdom's election to the Council reflects international appreciation for Jordan's role—under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II—in promoting and protecting the human rights ecosystem. He noted that it affirms the international community's confidence in the Kingdom and its steadfast positions supporting the principles of human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as its commitment to international law and the UN Charter.
Al-Majali pointed out that during its membership in the Council, the Kingdom will continue working with member states to strengthen the international human rights framework, support the Council's work and mechanisms, advance international cooperation to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, solidify principles of justice, equality, and the rule of law, and safeguard the rights of women, children, persons with disabilities, and the groups most in need of protection.
He underscored that the Kingdom's membership in the Council will serve as an opportunity to continue its efforts in defending the rights of the brotherly Palestinian people, foremost among which is their right to freedom, self-determination, and the establishment of their independent, sovereign state on the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, while confronting Israeli violations of international law and international humanitarian law.
Al-Majali expressed the Kingdom's appreciation and gratitude for the stances of the member states that voted in favor of Jordan, stressing that this trust reflects Jordan's international standing, its active role in multilateral action, and its diplomacy grounded in dialogue, moderation, cooperation, and partnerships with the United Nations and its institutions to enhance human rights and preserve human dignity.
He congratulated the sisterly and friendly nations that won election to the Council.
The UN Human Rights Council, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, was established by a UN General Assembly resolution in 2006. It comprises 47 member states elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms based on the principle of equitable geographical distribution. The Council is tasked with promoting and protecting human rights globally, addressing violations, and offering recommendations.
